“Still Life and Blossoming Almond Trees” was commissioned by Rosalie Meyer Stern during Rivera and Frida Kahlo’s visit to the Bay Area. Stern was a social leader in San Francisco and funded the construction of campus’s Stern Hall, according to The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life. The mural depicts Stern’s husband and some farmworkers in Stern’s orchard as well as her grandchildren reaching into a bowl of fruit. Rodrigues Widholm said Rivera is one of the world’s most important Mexican artists. She said Rivera’s work is about the “common person,” often depicting laborers and the working class. As part of the mural’s relocation to Doe, it has joined BAMPFA’s collection and the museum is now responsible for ensuring that the mural is safe, secure and kept in good condition.
