Catholic cardinal electors from five continents are gathered at the Vatican for the 2025 conclave to select the next pope. The conclave began on Wednesday, exactly 16 days after the death of 88-year-old Pope Francis. It is impossible to say how long the conclave will last, but many observers expect the 133 cardinal electors to choose a new pontiff within a few days. Outside, a temporary chimney is in place where crowds will eagerly watch for signals: black smoke meaning no pope has been chosen or white smoke indicating a new pope has been elected.
