Dos Mares: Where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez. Known as the “Aquarium of the World,” the waters surrounding Baja California Sur are home to an extraordinary concentration of marine life, from scalloped hammerheads and whale sharks to giant manta rays and migrating whales. These waters also nourish vast schools of small pelagics, like anchovies and sardines, which form the foundation of marine food webs. This biodiversity hotspot also sustains nearly 8,000 artisanal fishers and their families, as well as sport fishers and tourism operators who rely on healthy seas. But industrial fishing, unregulated tourism, LNG exports, and deep-sea mining are threatening it all. That’s where the proposed Dos Mares Biosphere Reserve comes in.
