Today is the 125th anniversary of the arrival of Klondike gold in Seattle! On March 8th, 1898, Norwegian immigrant and Seattle resident Inga Sjolseth Kolloen began her journey through the Chilcoot Pass on her way to Dawson City in Alaska, as a part of the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898. As documented in her travel diary (University of Washington Special Collections), the adventure lasted until June 25th of that year, and saw Inga confronted with several dangers, ranging from avalanches to shipwrecks. The gold nugget necklace seen here was owned and worn by Inga and was generously donated to the Museum’s permanent collection in late 2021.
