University of Missouri students on Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance plans are struggling to find accessible primary healthcare providers on campus after MU Health Care and Anthem failed to reach a contract agreement on healthcare pricing after eight months of negotiation.
“It just feels like they don't really care about the health of their students, as they dropped us so quickly,” said MU senior MJ Montgomery. Spectrum Health Care, a Columbia non-profit clinic, said that as of April 18, its patients increased by 30% after the MU Health Care and Anthem contract termination was announced. MU Health Care recommends patients transition to another healthcare provider if they cannot pay out-of-network costs.
“I know that there are other services [off-campus], but I currently don't have a car because it broke down,” said MU sophomore Gordon Lynch. “I can ask people to take me to appointments, but I really don't want to be a bother to people like that.”
