Are you enjoying our #stjosephs130th history lessons? Today, we'll explore how BarrowNeuro became one of the world's leading neurological centers known for excellence in patient care, medical education and research. It was 1954 and coal magnate Charles Barrow was so impressed by Dr. John Green, the Sisters of Mercy’s stewardship, and the care St. Joseph’s provided to his ill wife that he began making donations to the hospital. Four years later, Mr. Barrow handed Sister Mary Placida, our hospital administrator at the time, a letter. He promised to donate $500,000 to the hospital, if matching funds could be obtained. A few months later, the sum was secured and construction of Barrow Neurological Institute followed with doors officially opening in 1962. When Barrow initially opened, it was one of only three neuroscience institutions in the country! #fascinating
