Wanakee Carr's first day in an OB-GYN unit went something like this: Hey, do you want to deliver a baby? Yeah. How else are you going to know if you're interested in it or not? Carr, now 38, remembered doctors teaching her how to deliver a baby just before she met the mother who was in preterm labor. The doctors were "pretty hands off" and let her perform the medical procedure, she said. That single family's life-changing moment led Carr to her career, providing maternity care especially to Black and Brown mothers in central Iowa at theiowaclinic. Carr is among the few Black doctors practicing obstetrics and gynecology in Iowa, which already is facing a shortage of OB-GYN doctors, especially in rural areas.
