#DYK 🧐 There are more than 200 species of chameleons, and almost half of them live in Madagascar. 🌈
We may be biased, but our favorite is the Voeltzkow’s Chameleon, a species once lost to science for over 100 years. Thanks to a dedicated expedition team, this species was officially rediscovered in 2020 in northwestern Madagascar. They also discovered that female Voeltzkow’s Chameleons are extremely colorful with a striking pattern of purple, orange, red, green, black, and white. The chameleons, of course, can change their color depending on their ‘mood,’ and the number of red dots on their flanks varies by individual.
Nearly all the chameleon species in Madagascar are found nowhere else in the world, underscoring the need for conservation efforts as their habitats continue to be destroyed. 🟢 Re:wild is dedicated to working with partners like wildlifemadagascar to ensure vital ecosystems in Madagascar can remain protected for species like chameleons to thrive.
