Rumeysa Ozturk, the Tufts University student who was arrested in March by federal agents wearing masks and plainclothes, returned to Massachusetts on Saturday after six weeks in federal custody. Her return came one day after a federal judge ordered that she be immediately released. Ozturk, a Turkish citizen, was among more than a thousand international students whose visas were canceled by the U.S. government and who have faced deportation as the Trump administration escalated its attack on higher education, saying its goal was to root out antisemitism. Ozturk had written an opinion piece in a student newspaper criticizing the university’s response to pro-Palestinian demands. Her supporters said that she was detained in retaliation for her speech in violation of the First Amendment. #RumeysaOzturk #immigration #trump #tufts
