We typically look beneath the waves to protect the health of our oceans — but don’t forget to look up!
In May, several species of seabirds will undergo extensive journeys across the ocean to breed, nest, and find food. Soaring through the sky, the birds’ migration is a crucial quest that helps secure the survival of their species for generations.
Healthy seabirds equal healthy seas. Seabirds spread nutrients through their guano (poop!), which fertilizes plant life and boosts coastal habitats like coral reefs and mangroves. They also act as nature’s alarm bells: Declines in seabird populations can signal that an area of the ocean is being overfished, allowing us to take action.
Keep an eye on the sky this
#WorldMigratoryBirdDay and beyond to witness one of nature’s most remarkable journeys — and to remember the vital role birds play in maintaining healthy oceans.
