Berkeley Unified School District, or BUSD, announced that it rescinded 166 potential layoff notices for teachers, administrators and other staff at its regular Wednesday meeting last week. It also approved final notices for about 19 full-time equivalent nonteaching staff — cuts to administrative positions that received pushback from community members. Facing a $7.6 million budget deficit heading into the next academic year, BUSD previously issued notices of potential layoff or reassignment to 373 district staff members, marking the “first time in recent BUSD history” that cuts have affected employees at all levels of the district, according to BUSD School Board President Ka’Dijah Brown.
