As Marshall County's emergency management coordinator, Kim Elder is in daily contact with Iowa's National Weather Service team on potential severe weather developments.
Elder worked with the office's employees to inform residents of safety protocols during the devastating 2020 derecho, which caused more than $7.5 billion in damages across the state, and a 2018 tornado in Marshalltown that ran through the center of the city.
Iowa meteorology experts are warning that recent cuts to jobs and a temporary reduction in weather balloon data collection at the National Weather Service's parent agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, could erode the accuracy of forecasting Iowa's already-dynamic weather and incoming tornado season.
