What is American soccer culture? It’s a question that feels more pressing with every passing month before the World Cup. At times, it’s one that feels tempting to answer with one big brush. Brazil is the land of Joga Bonito. England is the perennial home of footballing tradition. America is…X. Throughout our first seven stops on this bus roadtrip—and thanks to the Open Cup—we’ve found that perhaps it’s impossible to answer it so cleanly. Maybe American soccer culture is taking shots of the finest Kentucky bourbon in an empty stadium lot at 2pm. Or dressing up as a Sasquatch to entertain a soccer-loving community in the middle of the woods. Or singing your favorite chants from back home beneath the Florida palm trees. It’s traditions and quirks from every corner of this land woven into one rich tapestry that we’ll all hopefully get to share with the world next year.
