Clarence Lang resides in State College, where he has served as the Susan Welch Dean of
@pennstateliberalarts and as a professor of African American Studies since 2019. With a background in history, his academic focus centers on African American urban history and social movements, particularly in the Midwest. Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, Clarence spent his entire life in the Midwest before relocating to State College.
Like many of his peers in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Clarence was deeply influenced by Sesame Street. The iconic characters—Ernie and Bert, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch, Big Bird, and the rest of the crew—played a pivotal role in his childhood, teaching him to count, spell, explore music, and nurture his imagination. Beyond those lessons, they instilled in him a lasting appreciation for being part of something greater than himself.
