The city has designated Veterans Bridge as an alternate route, adding barriers and bollards to protect a wide lane for walking and biking on one side. The Walnut Street Bridge is about two-fifths of a mile from start to finish. The Veterans Bridge detour is about 1.1 miles in length. On the opposite side, the Market Street bridge will also likely absorb some diverted traffic, said Errol Williams, spokesperson for Chattanooga’s public works department. That route is about a fifth of a mile longer than the pedestrian bridge.
