Soup in the winter is a bear hug. It's relief from the biting winter wind, it's laughing at stories around a table, it's communion. I know for some people the holidays are wonderful, and for others they are painful. I can't think of a more lovely reprieve from the cold than gathering with a friend for a bowl of soup.
