This ordinance is part of Newsom’s statewide effort to address “unhealthy and dangerous houseless encampments, according to a press release. The announcement was in tandem with Newsom providing $3.3 billion in Proposition 1 funding, expanding housing and treatment for ill and unhoused Californians.
“The governor’s recent statements don’t change our local policies here,” Mayor Adena Ishii said in an email. “He is merely recommending an ordinance that he would like to cities adopt. The next steps for us are to stay the course. We’re already looking at how to access more funding to support our unhoused population.”
