Born in 1890, Erwin Eden was the younger Brother of Douglas Eden and resident of Irkwell Hall throughout his life. He was a prolific artist, although largely unrecognised, and was a competent draftsman, sculptor, and painter. He is noted as the artist behind many of the more unusual additions to the Irkwell family estate including the Turf Maze and various gardens. He is also responsible for the design of The Eden Book Society paperbacks and reportedly viewed his creation of the marbled paper in their designs as a form of divination. His "self-portrait" bird sculpture was a proposed 30-foot high wood pigeon hewn from local stone with Erwin's face and features. Notes from the Eden Family Archive mention that he was largely reclusive and rarely left the family estate.
