That's the advice from Acting Senior Sergeant Josh Perkins to drivers as part of
#NationalRoadSafetyWeek.
Each year more than half of all fatal and serious injury collisions happen on rural roads.
And it’s not just holiday makers, long-distance travellers, or city drivers - most of these collisions involve locals, often close to home.
While patrolling roads from Geelong to the South Australian border and up to the Murray, Josh has witnessed firsthand the unique challenges of driving in regional Victoria.
“There isn’t as much, if any, street lighting on rural highways. You must always be on high alert for animals, kangaroos, deer, wombats, koalas and loose cattle and sheep. You just don’t see these things in metro areas.”
