MARTY THE MASCOT: On March 13, 2018, Marty, a Bichon-Poodle mix, lies on the shoulder of Mr. Winter in room 134, his home away from home. Not too long after Winter took the job advising the newspaper and the yearbook at Mac in 2015, Marty became an integral part of the campus community for staffers and non-staffers alike.
“Marty was basically our unofficial mascot,” said Sophie Ryland, 2017-2018 editor-in-chief of the Shield. “I could tell Winter was happy that we all adored Marty so much, just like he did. My family currently has a poodle mix, which I believe Marty was, and they are incredibly smart and affectionate dogs, so it’s no surprise to me that Marty was such a meaningful companion to Mr. Winter, his family, and our MacJournalism family as a whole.”
Marty’s legacy had a lasting impact on students, even after they exited McCallum’s doors, especially Ryland.
