Goodbye sun! The polar night has officially descended on the very north of Sweden! đ
Â
For nearly 25 days in December and January, the sun remains below the horizon in Swedenâs northernmost city of Kiruna. đŻ But donât be fooled â itâs not as dark as it seems. We sometimes refer to it as the Arctic light.
Â
Even when thereâs no sunlight during the day, the snow reflects blue light, creating a light phenomenon called Kaamos. âïž North, the sky looks blue. South, there is a blush along the horizon, coloured by the sun.
Â
In essence, midwinter in the north is not all darkness â itâs just that different times of the year bring different types of light.
