Nope, this is not a church. This is and always was a fish market! 🐟 We are in Gothenburg on the Swedish west coast, where the fishing industry has always been important. Up until the second half of the 19th century, the city’s fish business was not very hygienic, to say the least. Herring was basically piled up on the street, which made life worse for pedestrians and provided a constant stench in the area. So Gothenburg decided to act! In 1874, the new fish market building was completed. And because people thought it looked like a church, it was quickly nicknamed 'the fish church', or Feskekôrka in Gothenburg dialect. ⛪ Feskekôrka became a listed building in 2013. For the last few years, it has been closed for refurbishment, but it reopened just in time to celebrate its 150th anniversary.
