Meet the musk ox – an ancient, majestic creature that has roamed the northern hemisphere since before the Ice Age. ❄️ After the ice melted, the musk ox disappeared from many regions, but a small herd made its way from Norway 🇳🇴 to Sweden's Härjedalen 🇸🇪 in the 1970s. Sadly, their numbers have dropped because of climate change. This summer, a research team went out on foot, exploring the mountains and collecting samples like droppings and wool. 💩 They managed to find five musk oxen, including a calf! 😍 The Musk Ox 2030 research project brings together several major partners, all working to map out the current musk ox population and plan for their future. 🔍🗺️ With the help of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, they’re studying how the musk ox helps biodiversity in mountain ecosystems by spreading seeds.
