🌳 Starting in the 1830s, some 300,000 oak trees were planted on the Swedish island of Visingsö in Lake Vättern. This was done to secure high-quality timber for the Swedish Navy's shipbuilding. ☎️ But in 1975, when the Swedish Chief of Navy received a call about the first trees finally being deemed old enough to be cut down, the era of wooden shipbuilding was over. That ship had sailed, so to speak. ⛵ Today, the valuable timber from Visingsö is still used, for example to build replicas of old ships. One of the more famous ones is the sailing ship Götheborg of Sweden – a scaled replica of an 18th-century ship that was used for trade with China. 🪑 Also, furniture made from these oak trees can be found on the small island of Riddarholmen and in Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, among other places.
