π Welcome to Old Uppsala! Considered to be one of the most important historical sites in Sweden, this place with its characteristic big mounds takes you back to before the Viking Age β in fact, all the way back to the Iron Age.
Old Uppsala β located north of today's city of Uppsala β was a central place for religion, economy and politics as early as the 4th century A.D. By the end of the Middle Ages, it was the largest village in the region.
What's buried in the mounds, you wonder? π€ The Swedes used to wonder as well. People used to believe that they contained remnants of old heathen gods. π However, excavations in the 19th century revealed that they were only graves of mere humans.
Today, people come here to have a wander around in the beautiful surroundings β and to learn more about the history of the Viking era at the nearby Gamla Uppsala museum, Old Uppsala Museum.
