THEN & NOW! May is Historic Preservation Month. During World War II, the United States Coast Guard was in the Department of the Navy and the men and women, called SPARS, wore a navy uniform. At the Light Station, men kept watch at the top and lived in a small barracks building on the Lighthouse property. Anastasia Islanders lived in black out conditions, as U-boats patrolled the coast. 📸: Photos show the U.S. Coast Guard Barracks during World War II and today. View artifacts in a WWII exhibit in the building, which is included in admission at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum. #staugustinelighthouse #historicpreservation #preservationmonth #savingplaces #WWII #staugustine #florida #ushistory #worldhistory #museum #maritimemuseum #florida #floridahistory #coastguard
