THEN & NOW! May is Historic Preservation Month.
During World War II, the United States Coast Guard was in the Department of the Navy and the men and women, called SPARS, wore a navy uniform. At the Light Station, men kept watch at the top and lived in a small barracks building on the Lighthouse property. Anastasia Islanders lived in black out conditions, as U-boats patrolled the coast.
