A slab crappie caught in Virginia would have set a new world record, but the fish won't be accepted into the IGFA record books due to a measuring technicality.⁠ ⁠ Since Tim White released his black crappie before weighing it, the fish was not eligible for a state record either. In hindsight, though, White’s fish could have set a new world record for length. The current IGFA length record for black crappie is 16.54 inches. White’s Virginia crappie was two inches longer, at 18.5 inches, but it won’t qualify for an IGFA world record because it wasn’t measured on an official IGFA measuring device.
