Mark Carney is distancing himself from his father’s views on residential schools. 🏫
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s father, Robert Carney, served as principal of an Indian Day School in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories (NWT), and publicly defended the Indian residential school system in March 1965.
While not a residential school, Robert Carney was principal of the Joseph Burr Tyrrell Indian Day School, which enrolled both settler and Indigenous students. He later became superintendent of schools in the NWT and later served as acting director general for Indian Affairs.
