The David Geffen Theater at the Academy Museum is one of only five theaters in the U.S. that can show nitrate films, and they happen to be showing Alfred Hitchcock’s first color film, “Rope” on 35mm nitrate on Friday, May 30th. But nitrate stopped being used as a way to show movies in the early 1950s because it catches on fire very easily. @tom stopped by to chat with the senior projectionist and the director of film programming to better understand why risk showing a very flammable film format. #latimes #movies
