Spending time with our elders before they pass is everything in Chinese culture. It’s about honoring their legacy, showing respect, and staying connected to where we come from. That value—xiao, or filial piety—has been passed down for generations, and it’s something I carry with me deeply.
One of the most meaningful ways we do that is through food. Growing up, eating together—especially at Chinese restaurants—wasn’t just about the meal. It was about family, love, unity. Those round tables, the lazy Susans, the shared dishes—that’s how we bond, how we pass down stories, and how we show care without needing words.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized those moments around the table with elders are some of the most sacred. They’re how we keep tradition alive. How we stay rooted. How we say, “I’m here with you,” before it’s too late.
