The Sopranos made its debut on this day in 1999. Even decades after it first aired, many still believe it to be the best TV show ever filmed, starring our alum James Gandolfini (RC'83).
Gandolfini had intended to pursue a career in managing bars and clubs, but at 25, an acting class taught by another Rutgers graduate redirected his path. James Gandolfini was immediately drawn to acting and developed a strong passion for the craft. The rest was history.
James Gandolfini's outstanding portrayal of his character in the Sopranos earned him several awards and nominations, including Emmy, Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe. The show also gained significant recognition. Despite his success, Gandolfini always remained connected to his home state and Alma mater, Rutgers University, and even featured in commercials for the university's athletics program.
