During Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we continue to honor the diverse cultures and contributions that shape our shared history. At KalaupapaNPS on the island of Molokaʻi, stories of strength, dignity, and community are woven into the landscape. For over a century, Native Hawaiians and others diagnosed with Hansen’s disease (leprosy) were forcibly isolated here. Kalaupapa preserves the memories of those who lived here, including the legacy of figures like Saint Damien and Mother Marianne Cope, who cared for the community with compassion.
