The Berkeley City Council received a mid-biennial budget update for the 2026 fiscal year, which includes a projected $18.68 million general fund deficit as of May, at their regular meeting Tuesday. The update highlighted similar issues as discussed in the budget update at the Budget & Finance Policy Committee meeting April 24, such as a persistent structural deficit in the last few years and a lack of adequate resources for the upcoming fiscal year. The city has already adopted other measures to balance the budget, such as a worker compensation holiday and an option to use the Section 115 Trust to pay for pension costs. Other options include making further use of the Section 115 Trust, transferring 50% of the funding from the city’s IT Allocation Plan and reallocating Measure U1 funding meant for the Small Sites program.
