Code changes that will allow places of worship in Des Moines to voluntarily use their properties as camping sites to host people experiencing homelessness were soundly approved by City Council members on May 19. Local clergy and faith leaders will be able to offer their lawns for temporary camping voluntarily, and places of worship will be able to act as emergency shelters during extreme heat and cold.
