During World War II, thousands of Americans died while training to enter the fight. One such aviator was Ens. Roy Len Lee, the uncle of aeronautics curator Russ Lee. In mid-January 1943, during a gunnery training flight off the coast of North Carolina, Ensign Lee had to bail out of his U.S. Navy Grumman F4F Wildcat for unknown reasons. He was not rescued.
Growing up, Russ Lee knew little of his Uncle Len's life or flying career, but he recently found a collection of photographs and correspondence from his uncle that provided valuable insight into his service and sacrifice. He shares excerpts from these letters, and honors his uncle's sacrifice, in a new biog. Visit the link in our bio to read now.
