Today on National LGBTIQA+ Domestic Violence Awareness Day, we join the community to raise awareness about how family violence impacts LGBTIQA+ communities.
LGBTIQA+ people can experience family violence from an intimate partner, and in their birth or chosen families.
Due to shame and fear, this can make it difficult for victims to seek help, increasing their social isolation.
As friends, colleagues, and allies, we can get a glimpse into what is really happening, and we can help.
Recognising and understanding how family violence can present in LGBTQIA+ communities and creating safe spaces for victims to talk about it, can make a big difference to giving victims the confidence they need to seek support.
In doing this, we also send a message to people who use family violence that they’re causing unacceptable harm.
