A watershed 500, On This Day thirty years ago. As Team Penske lurched from absolute domination in 1994 to not even qualifying in 1995(!), Jacques Villeneuve became the first Canadian to win the Indy 500. 🇨🇦 He did so despite serving a two lap penalty for passing the pace car, while first-on-the-road Scott Goodyear had been black flagged for refusing to serve a pace car related penalty himself. 😬
Growing acrimony within US open-wheel racing meant that this would be the last 500 before The Split, and the last to feature CART teams and drivers; the upcoming rival IRL series would take the eighty-year-old American institution with it. 👋
