Upemba National Park rangers look for a herd of elephants with community trackers in Mabwe, Democratic Republic of Congo. Covering an expansive area of nearly 800 square miles (12,751 square kilometers) in the southeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Upemba National Park is one of Africa's oldest national parks and home to many vulnerable species, including the critically endangered savanna elephants. Recent crises in the DRC have compounded the difficulties the park's rangers face in protecting the herd of around 200 elephants, as they face multi-pronged threats from militants and poachers.
