Our Cathedral residents got some new jewelry! The newly hatched peregrine falcons were banded recently by the @pagamecomm. These bands help scientists learn about a bird’s life history, including how long it lives, its breeding rate and how far it travels from its natal site.
This tradition started when the peregrine falcon was on Pennsylvania’s Endangered/Threatened Species list in hopes to aid in the effort to save this animal. As of 2021 the peregrine falcons were removed from this list and the act of banding continues to further our knowledge about our feathered friends.
If you want more bird content, you can livestream the chicks progress on the @national_aviary FalconCam!
