Happy #WorldOtterDay! 🦦 Did you know? Throughout the world, there are 13 different species of otters - most of which are considered vulnerable, threatened or endangered. Only the North American river otters, who you can visit in the Americas pavilion, are listed as a Least Concerned species. Sadly, pollution, habitat loss and hunting are contributing to their numbers decreasing in the wild, with large sections of their previously occupied habitat now sitting empty. Here close to home, your Toronto Zoo is home to two North American River otters, RJ (or Rascal Jr.) and Maybelle. RJ is 11 years old and was born at the Buffalo Zoo while Maybelle, on the other hand, is a 3.5 year-old female who arrived from the Calgary Zoo last summer 🦦 Both RJ and Maybelle can usually be spotted together, either swimming or cuddling. As construction on the new Community Conservation Centre at the front of the Zoo continues, we look forward to a new river otter habitat being built there which will go...
