Video footage of a March ASUC meeting regarding a proposed resolution designating a Hindu Heritage Month resurfaced in mid-May, sparking controversy among community groups. The resolution was proposed by former ASUC Senator Justin Taylor at the March 5 Senate meeting and was tabled indefinitely after discussion and concerns that the resolution “allude(d) to Hindu nationalist rhetoric.” The decision to table was met with backlash from students and community members who argued that this was reflective of broader Hinduphobia. The resolution itself, outside of calling for the acknowledgment of October as Hindu Heritage Month on the academic calendar, asks that the ASUC “encourages students to support” Hindu peers as well as to “better understand” and “educate other members of the student body on, the historic principles of Sanātana Dharma” — a term often used to synonymize Hinduism. .
