Two Le Mans 24h fun facts!
1) Le Mans Circuit de la Sarthe is over 8 miles (13km) long. So if the car gets stranded on the far side of the track, out on the Mulsanne , the car (by the rules) has to make it back to pitlane for the mechanics to be allowed to work on it. So many of the race cars carry in them a super basic tool kit so the driver could make an emergency repair to try and get the car to pitlane if something comes loose while out on track.
2) Many teams also put in the cars a super simple flip mobile phone that is pre-programmed to be able to reach the engineers on pit wall. For the same reason, the driver is the only one allowed to touch the car and cannot leave a certain area around the car, or it will be disqualified from the race. These are incredibly complicated machines, and sometimes the engineers will have a better idea of how to reboot the car if it loses power. But if it’s lost power, it will also lose radio communications to the pit wall. Hence the flip phone....
