As Disney and Pixar gear up to release Elio in Korea on July 18, one of the film’s most breathtaking features — shimmering sands and endless oceans — was brought to life by none other than Korean effects artist Lee Jae-joon 🇰🇷✨
Now 40, Lee joined Pixar in 2021 and has worked on major hits like Elemental and Inside Out 2 — the latter now the highest-grossing animated film ever. But Elio holds special meaning for him.
🗣️ “I saw myself in Elio’s loneliness,” he told Hankook Ilbo, reflecting on his own struggles as a teenager who once considered dropping out of school.
From three rejections to finally landing his dream job at Pixar, Lee’s story is one of persistence, passion, and healing through animation. In a time of industry uncertainty and rising AI, his human touch still shines through in every pixel.
