📢 Is Memphis Public Transit on the Chopping Block?
City Council just proposed cutting MATA’s city funding in HALF — from $30 million to $15 million — putting the future of public transit at serious risk.
MATA’s interim CEO said the move would “pretty much end public transit in Memphis.”
They’re already operating “on duct tape and shoestrings” just to keep buses moving.
📉 The remaining $15M would be held in city reserves until an audit is completed — but there’s no clear timeline or requirements. Meanwhile, MATA says they need at least $35 million to maintain service.
👥 Council members backing the cut:
Jerri Green, Philip Spinosa Jr., JB Smiley Jr., Michalyn Easter-Thomas
🗓 Final vote coming soon — June 10 & June 24.
This ain’t just about buses. It’s about access to jobs, school, and stability for thousands of Memphians.
đź’¬ Do YOU think MATA deserves full funding or not?
