Alameda County food providers and researchers have raised concerns that federal cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, contained in President Donald Trump’s proposed “One, Big, Beautiful Bill” could harm the economy and increase food insecurity. The proposed bill would cut $267 billion in federal funding from the program over the next 10 years. Additionally, it blocks updated benefit amounts regardless of increases in food prices, according to Ezer Pamintuan, senior policy advocate at Alameda County Community Food Bank, in an email. The proposal would also raise the upper age threshold to qualify for SNAP benefits with work requirements from 54 to 64 and lower the age of a dependent from 18 to 7, which would reduce the number of households with children who benefit from SNAP.
