In Wings (1927), the groundbreaking dolly shot during the café party scene is often hailed as one of the earliest and most ambitious tracking shots in cinema history.
Directed by William A. Wellman, the shot glides seamlessly through a bustling Parisian café, weaving between tables and partygoers before settling on the film’s lead.
To achieve this fluid motion decades before the invention of the Steadicam, the crew used a custom-built inverted rig hanging from an overhead rail.
Wings (1927) became the first recipient of the Academy Award for Best Picture. And to this day it is the only fully silent film to make off with the little golden man (sorry, 2011’s The Artist).
