Boston Marathon Race Recap, Part 4:
The beginning of marathons are sometimes a little too exhilarating. The invincibility one feels at mile 1 is foolhardy.
I call it the “Honey Badger Mile.”
You feel like you can beat anyone, fear nothing and conquer everything.
We went through the first mile in 5:42 and I felt INCREDIBLE.
💭Ohhh this is lovely. I am very content.
Another half mile went by around the same pace.
💭Great, this is going according to plan.
My coach told me to get through 4 miles feeling like I did the least amount of work.
Everyone was still together, which I expected. But then, all of a sudden, somebody started to surge.
💭Oh boy, already?!
Many races I have run there is always someone to test the field. To see where people are at and whether or not to call their bluff. I assumed everyone would let her go and settle in to an appropriate pace together, but that was not the case. The entire field moved with her and before I knew it, I was too.
