United by their passion for Florida’s natural landscapes, these two figures moved through the Everglades together in purpose, if not always in person. Deering, an early conservationist and arts patron, funded Small’s expeditions across South Florida to document its rapidly vanishing flora and ecosystems. Their partnership wasn’t just logistical—it was deeply collaborative. Small honored Deering by naming the rare plant Deeringothamnus after him.
