2 years ago, today | CA51As' gray whale predation. I don't think I ever shared much, if anything, of this event, but with similar photos on a very similar predation last week in Monterey, I guess I'm ready to share a little bit. It's nature. It's the circle of life. It was still a w f u l and thrilling to see at the same time. It was extra painful to watch because it lasted 6-7 hours as they were using it as a teaching moment for the young KWs. The gray whales, both mom and baby, put up a hell of a fight. Watching mom knowing she had to give up and let her calf feed the CA51As was the most heartbreaking thing EVER. You could feel her pain as she slowly swam away - envision it as a defeated human with their head down with barely any strength to keep walking. It went on for so. long. We often say 'oh, only grays out there today' or 'the boring whales' but you can't help but remember this event when seeing them, so now, we cheer them on, and fear for their trip north as they hop...
