I feel like this proverb captures the spirit of Cambodia — a people and a land that has gone through so much hardship, yet continues to evolve & adapt to life’s continuous flow. To encounter people with so much warmth and openness, despite such a dark and troubled history, was deeply moving… people who welcomed me with smiles and open arms, despite the role my own government played in their suffering only decades ago. But the Khmer Spirit seems to be an endless well of resilience, color, strength, softness, kindness, generosity, and humility. From the cities, to the villages, to the jungles, to the monasteries, to the markets, to the forest… Always more to give. I loved this country, and I loved how connected I felt to myself, nature, God, and the people of Cambodia during the week I spent here.
